How is it that we manage to be one of the quick instead of the dead in this...?

Actually, the quick and the dead are synonymous in this. Since those who are being judged are living dead. The quick is this current life which everyone is born into. The quickened are those who are no longer judged and have life in this world and beyond. They who are made partakers of the Spirit of the Living God and Father of all creation.
